My mother needs a hip replacement on one side, can just barley walk now and has a lot of pain due to really bad arthritis in that side of her hip joint. At first I thought great, after doing this she will have much better mobility, but the more I've read about it in patients with Dementia the more fearful I become. There can a real problem with brain fog and disorientation after the Surgery due to ansthesia and some people never get over that and become even more confused than they were before the operation. The second issue is following directions with rehab after the operation. Doing the wrong things can cause dislocation of the new hip joint and having to operate again. I'm pretty scared with this whole thing and thinking maybe she is better off just living from a wheelchair if she has too? She can now just barely stand up and really struggles to walk. She is 82 years old. Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? I'm worried about pressuring her to do this only to send her in a downward spiral and having her pass away before she would have otherwise. Then on the other hand I want her to have a decent quality of life. She currently lives in a assisted living place the past half year, got the point there she could not live on her own at home anymore as she took a bad fall last Feb but did not break any bones but ended up laying on the floor for a day.
