I am a SCI (Paraplegic) who was injured in 1976, Up until recently I have had a manual bowel with things being a bit difficult in later years with the usual roids etc. In March this year I had a incomplete prolapse repaired and a haemorrhoidectomy ( which was a surprise to me as a thought I was getting banding) the surgeon informed me that this would not have worked but I would like to have been properly informed so I had a choice. The stitching came loose after the operation and I was on bed rest for 2 months whilst they healed and I started Dulcolax as a way to minimize any aggravation to the healing i might have caused with manual evacuation. I have been taking 1 Dulcolax in the mornings since and it seems to have been working until yesterday and today when I had no result, I have wondered what do you do if the product stops working ? I am aware that some have been on the product for years but of course over time I understand that laxatives in general become less effective and the bowel starts to rely on them. As I have only been on them for about 5 months can I stop taking them and will I restore normal peristalsis in my bowel ? There is a balance I thought with manual bowel evacuation and aggravation one can cause down there so this may also be a factor.
