From day 1, I used an external catheter with a leg bag, and never had to cath (22 years). Due to age, and my bladder always having urine in it, my Uro suggested I start cathing. Due to involuntary bladder spasms, I had Botox injections into the bladder twice (the last time being 18 months ago). For the most part, it's been a good choice. No more leg/night bag, but my main downfall is that it doesn't seem that my bladder holds enough, and I still end up leaking!
I can feel when my bladder gets to the point that I need to go cath, and when I do, I empty on average 500ml. It's annoying to drink a glass of water, coffee, etc, and 5-10 minutes later rush to the bathroom. I say rush, because I have like 3 minutes to cath when I get the feeling before I leak.
Any suggestions on getting the bladder to hold more?
