First Friday Night Open House Programs Resume October 2nd

Our regular First Friday Open House programs will resume on October 2nd with tours of the lab on-going between 5-6:00 pm. At 6:00 Dr. Wise Young will present the latest in spinal cord injury research and clinical trials. The program will be followed by time for group questions and personal conversations with Dr. Young.

Our Center is located on the 2nd Floor of the Nelson Biological Laboratories building, on Rutgers' Busch Campus. Free parking available in Lot 56 in front of building. Click here for detailed directions.

RU-WINS Presents First Speaker of the New Season

Neurodevelopment and synaptic plasticity are the research interests of Dr. Lisa Boulanger, the first speaker in the RU-WINS (Rutgers University-Women in Neuroscience) Fall Series of Seminars. Dr. Boulanger, an Assistant Professor in Princeton University's Department of Molecular Biology, will speak on Friday, October 2nd at 12:00 noon in D-406, Nelson Biological Laboratories Building. The public is invited.

Following the lecture, Dr. Boulanger will meet with students over pizza to discuss science, career paths, and other topics of interest.

U.S. House of Representatives Reauthorizes Stem Cell Research

The United States House of Representatives recently passed legislation to reauthorize stem cell research and transplants that use stem cells from bone marrow and umbilical cord blood. The bill, which passed on a voice vote, authorizes and supports the National Cord Blood Inventory Program and other programs through 2020. The bill does not include the use of embryonic stem cells.

Congratulations, Massachusetts Walks Again

Gathering in the Massachusetts State House to celebrate Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day was a powerful collaboration of legislators, rehabilitation facilities, consumer organizations, scientists, researchers, and advocates. This year the program "Tell Your Story" featured ways to stress the need for increased research funding in personal and compelling terms.

The Massachusetts SCI Trust Fund, established in 2004, has received more than $750,000 in state support for spinal cord injury research in Massachusetts. If you are interested in learning more about this initiative, please contact Dr. Eric Ruby whose dogged persistence created this fund and continues focusing on the purpose through initiatives such as the Annual Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day. Dr. Ruby can be reached at docruby22@yahoo.com.

Special Appreciation to:

Ms. Arlene Gonzalez for her leadership of A Walk to Believe and to Eric LeGrand. This 5th Annual 5K Run and Fun Walk raises funds for spinal cord injury research, a portion of which is donated to the Spinal Cord Injury Project. Due to Ms. Gonzalez' and Eric's diligence, the funds continue to increase. She will be presenting a check at the October 2nd Open House. Thank you Arlene and Eric!

Dr. Didier Demesmin for designating the Spinal Cord Injury Project as one of the recipients of a fundraiser he recently held in New York City. The event was an excellent opportunity to share our research with new people. We also learned the Dr. Demesmin is a specialist in pain management and is located in nearby Somerset. We are grateful to Dr. Demesmin!
