I have made some bad decisions in my life but this colostomy is about the worst. I am not venting as much as warning other paras BE CAREFUL. I listened to two quads who told me they were having no problems with theirs it was the best thing they ever did. I listened to them because I was having GI problems enough to effect my work and I finally quit and retired early. Bowel care was still a problem was mostly flying projectile diarrhea so I had colostomy in July and it has been nothing but problems since and I am getting to the end of my rope. After surgery my stool was like thick window calking not wanting to leave my body so began taking Senna Lax and water pills and that started the blow outs. I have had 1 wafer that went the whole 4 days without leaking the rest have all leaked and had to be changed early this last month. Put one on yesterday and it leaked so I replaced before bed last night and then today it was leaking so replaced and the new one is leaking tonight. I am pretty good about following directions and clean the skin up with adhesive remover then put on the sticky stuff then some stoma adhesive then I gently form the wafer so it fits right over the stoma then spend at least 2 minutes sticking the wafer to me with my warm fingers and it looks fine no problems. Then my stomach starts making noise and I get the AD prelims that indicates my body is doing something and the bag begins to fill with liquid stool.
Here is where the problem is but Home health doesn't think so; as my body lets go of the diarrhea under pressure the bag begins to fill but is stuck to the wafer on the inside where my fingers were pushing down against the wafer and the liquid can not force the inside of the bag to open so there is not room for stool because the bag wont open. As the pressure increases the plastic of the bag stays stuck to the wafer ad the pressure inside goes up and finally the stool finds its way out beneath the wafer because the pressure is so high.
Its past midnight and the wafer is still leaking out and I have a doctors appointment at 10 tomorrow. Because I have to change appliance everyday I am unning low on supplies supposed to stop by Homehealth tomorrow and they are going to give me some supplies that got turned back in but expect my skin to start breaking down because that stool is leaking on the skin everyday.
I hope you fellow SCI or the nursing staff have developed a work around with this problem because I am at the end of my rope and don't see any light at the end of this tunnel.
