long flights and foleys
I've never used a foley cath, just intermittent cath. Did a flight from Chicago to LAX and just barely made it in time to get off and get straight to a restroom. So it has me wondering now if people are using a foley for the duration of long travel and if so could you offer some insight to the actual products. Are there different types, one that might be a better fit for this particular need over another? Health risks?

I've had a fusion for about 9 months and altho it is exceptionally comfortable, I'm just too high. I was looking at the J3 with the top padding being grey and course. I'm wondering if that padding is as soft as the white padding on the fusion? Doesn't look like it. I'm confused. I feel like if I go with the J2 or the union its just gonna be too soft and I'll bottom out or bust the gel/air insert.

Tramadol & Insomnia anyone?
I've had severe insomnia for as long as I can remember.. I started taking Ambien a few months ago & that has helped, but I'm still only getting about 4-5 hours of sleep at night. I also take Tramadol in the afternoon & at night for pain. Has anyone had issues with Tramadol/Ultram/Ultracet keeping them awake? In searching online I see it is a side-effect for some, but the percentage appears low.
If I didn't take it the pain/achiness I feel at night would surely keep me awake.

Folding portable shower bench/commode chair
I have an Altimate folding portable travel shower bench/commode chair system that was only used about 10 times for work-related travel, the last time being about 19 years ago. It is in perfect shape and I'm never going to use it again since I am long since retired and unable to transfer the way I used to. I'd like to find someone that could benefit from this, as I like passing on things that could help others. It comes with a zippered nylon storage bag. It weighs 23 pounds in the bag.
Does anyone have recommendations for where I can advertise this item? Someone preferably who was active and travels and could really benefit from having such an item.

Finally sore free!
I haven't been able to say that 3 years. It's all closed up and looking good. My rear end is a roadmap of what not to do when you can't feel your butt. I'm able to get up for 4 hours twice a day and it's served me well. I'm working with a nurse practitioner who has tons of experience and recommended some excellent covers for my sore and is now having some kind of compounded stuff to help protect new skin. I'm just so happy it's finally gone. Geez, what am I going to do with myself if I'm not on bed rest? LOL. I guess I'll be able to go back to vocational rehab facilities to get ready to get a job. Awesome! I can't wait.

Alternative leg bag straps
I noticed a few leg bag discussions so I thought I'd pass on the solution I came up with for my sister. When she started using a Foley cath a couple of years ago, we had problems with the elastic straps -- the kind that hook on to the buttons. As others have pointed out, the elastic can be stiff and leave marks on the patient's skin. I come from a crafting/sewing family, so I bought a few rolls of this at Hobby Lobby:
It's 100% polyester and gives a gentle stretch. The holes easily fit over the buttons on the bag and after several months, if the elastic gets pulled out of shape, just cut a new strip. It's pretty inexpensive, so I bought colors to coordinate with my sister's skirts, even though the leg bag is hidden when she goes out. We girls like to have matching underthings. One of the nurses at her wound-care doc called them her "garters." :)

Possible to replace TiLite sling seat with one less deep?
I have a TiLite Aero Z that is about a year old. I need to shorten the seat depth because the nylon rubs against the back of my calves causing problems if I am in the chair for very long.
I have the bolt-on adjustable sling type of seat. My seat is 20" wide by 19" deep.
I considered just cutting the material but I was worried it would frey over time.
Does anyone know if it is possible to acquire a sling that is 1" shorter? Would the bolt holes still line up with the existing holds in my frame?

So I started too early, because the season was early. Of course the sun and photoperiod-ism thing bit me in the butt. I had a purple indica plant or 2 go into deep reveg mode. They are actually just now looking really healthy. I also had a sweet black angel reveg, but it appears to be very sativa dominant and recovered months ago.

Hand Pain
:thinking::thinking:Ok this is my first post I am 6 months into my injury, I am c6 c7 incomplete, I see no one discussing hand pain. I know I'm not alone here With the pain. But I guess my biggest question is does anyone use aggressive hand stretching like I do. It seems to be the only thing to "CALM" my hands. I take 400 milligrams of lyrica a day, I'm really not sure how much it helps. I'm sure I have many more questions but I will start here.:lovingeye

Just returned from traveling abroad for anterior/posterior cervical revision surgery. One of the immediate changes is a return to normal BP [ 115 / 90 ] after nearly 5 yrs low BP [ 70 / 50 ]. I am having vision problems for about an hour in the morning at wake up, headaches generated instantly upon tilting for pressure relief of my bottom, and digestive issues.
You would think return to normal BP to be a good thing, but I'm concerned years of low BP altered my body and my optic nerve / brain and the sudden increase may be causing damage...
Any insight comments appreciated.

issues with Smart Drive
So... I love my Smart Drive. Almost to the point where I don't want to go out anymore without it.
However, I am having a lot of problems with it.
I've had to send it back for numerous repairs, like half a dozen times in the past year.
The circuit board has "fallen off" from inside at least 3 times now.
And they've replaced pretty much all the parts except the outside casing.
So... I still have these issues with it. Random outages, buttons acting weird, and even a small amount of water has caused it to stop functioning.
I really don't abuse it, I just use it to assist. I go up curbs and all that everyday stuff.
Isn't it suppose to handle that daily use?

kidney stone
I keep getting a kidney stone in my left kidney. I just had it removed in february 2013. they went through my back and took several procedures to get it out. they put a tube in my back twice cause it wasnt put in the right spot, then 2 different procedures to remove the stone.. now I have a stone again in the same spot and its the size of a quarter. dr says it's got to be removed the same way because it's so big. is there any way i can prevent this, i drink a lot of water. what am i supposed to do... go every 2.5 years and go through this procedure? it can't be good for my kidney and i don't do good with anesthesia. Dr said we can't do the shock treatment to break it up because of size.

My shoulder problems are not getting any better so I am finally taking the plunge towards a easier way of propulsion. I am looking for recommendations for a power or electric wheelchair. I live in the north country meaning it gets cold up here. I live on a farm so I am outside a lot where there isn't always a nice smooth sidewalk to roll on. I am in need of a chair that is at home in both indoor and outdoor environments. I am looking for something that is rugged, reliable, maneuverable, easy to maintain that isn't the size of an SUV. I would like to hear from you the users and what your experiences, good, bad or otherwise have been. Pictures or website links would be greatly appreciated.

Can position of the 'boys' interfere with urine flow
Bizarre question, I know. I recently bought a new lift and sling, and find that once I'm situated in my chair, I often find that I'm sitting on my scrotum. My trusty attendant grabs a hand full and pulls them out a bit. Some days, for no obvious reason, I have trouble urinating (I wear an external cath), and wondered if it's possible that depending how the boys are positioned, that this is some way blocks the flow of urine?

Hello, new member here -- not SCI, but caregiver for spina bifida para. First my question, then a little background info.
Questions: Does anyone travel in a Braun-conversion minivan with a power wheelchair and patient Hoyer-type lift? How do you do it?
Background: My sister uses a Jazzy motorized chair, she needs the tilt feature due to pressure wound history. My parents always transferred her until Mom had a stroke and Dad had back surgery. Sis was bedridden for a few months, then we got an Invacare Reliant 450 that I use (it works great). We have had a Ford Econoline 15-passenger van with a Ricon swing-in lift, but I've never driven it due to my size (I'm not quite 5'2"). Time to get a new vehicle that I feel comfortable driving, mostly for in-town and the occasional day trip. We've ruled out big vans with lifts and are looking at a Braun minivan, but I understand that due to the kneeling feature, towing is prohibited. Our patient lift won't fit in the van with my sister in her chair. If something came up (a family funeral, for example) that neccessitated an overnight trip, I'm guessing we'd have to rent a fold-able lift (lots of medical vendors where I am). Looking for options.

Rear Wheel Size Preference
Working on driver license again
Mot sure if this belongs in this Forum. Anyhow, I did start attempting to regain drive license once again. Have gone farther than any other try. Have gotten signed attempt approval from OT doctor last week. Appointment from neuro doctor also has said will sign form. Waiting for this in mail. Then I get to send them to PA DOT and see if they approve me to move forward. Have not driven since 2002.

Difficulty with stretching legs
Last month onwards I have been experiencing pain in my left knee. It doesn?t hurt much when walking up/down stairs, but it hurts a lot when stretching my legs to sit in different postures (cross-legged). The pain is sharp sometimes feels like a burning sensation. I didn?t have any injuries recently. Initially, I thought it might be due to my sleeping positions and I now I feel it?s not the issue. The pain is sometimes severe and really irritating while I work in my office. I heard physiotherapy will be a good choice and I have been doing physiotherapy at sports injury clinic in Toronto. Did anyone experience like this before? Will physiotherapy be effective?

I am 5 years away from a milestone b-day and approaching 30 years as a quad.... I'm tired. I've had enough. Life is hard. (Despite my moderate trappings of success)
I have a fantasy of a 5 year long "hangover Movie" type party. (I'd be the bradley Cooper guy) Travel to far off places and party the fuck out ticking off as many bucket list elements as possible.
Then the day after the big milestone - Sayōnara.
I have the money - Just not a group of friends to take off with. They are all living the happy A/B life I was supposed to live. That all of you were supposed to live.

Motorcycle training - partial paraparesis Rt. leg (below knee) - doable ??
Hi All -
My 1st post in years - been off the grid since 2010 so hola. I live in Dallas, Tx.
I have no muscle activity (drop foot - dead muscles below knee) on my Right leg. Walk with a carbon fiber toe-off AFO; in process of moving to a custom KAFO am currently training in. Left leg is normal.
I am desperate to get back into motorcycling after decades away from the sport.
Since (fortunately) the shifter on a motorbike is on the left side, I am ok to change gears. But the areas of concern on the Right side would naturally be:
* rear braking/balanced braking
* balance on turning
* keeping my Right leg/foot on the foot peg at speed/turns
AND most importantly -
* how to stabilize/ hold the bike/balance when stopped
Where do I begin this journey ? Does anyone in the Dallas, D/FW help with this kind of training/modification stuff (if needed) ? I would love to get my Texas Motorcycle endorsement on my Drivers License.
Any help is much appreciated. I love Motorbiking. :cooldude:

White in pressure sore?
Hi, been a long time since I had a sore and I can't remember a couple things. What is the white stuff inside sore and does it need to be removed. I have nurses coming out in a few days, I'm looking after it myself with Allevyn dressing and intrasite gel. Hopefully you'll tell me it's healthy tissue, but I think it would be red not white.

Ways to stop leakage at nights?
Whenever I lay down, my bladder seems to just be free flowing. Whenever I cath after leaking at night, I barely get anything out, but I still leak. It makes no sense to me and is very frustrating. Is there anything I can do, or do I just have to deal with it? I had some tests done where they put some blue dye into my bladder while lying down and it held up fine. I don't know what to do.

Good Morning all,
Figure I would share some beach chair in action from over the weekend- The sand at the top of the beach was rather soft, which is a bit harder to push through, but once down by the water it was no problem. We did able a 2 mile walk (roll) down the beach and back. What an amazing feeling to take beach walks with my GF again.

I got good laugh out of this and thought you may get a chuckle....
I have had some excess meds and been working with a few patients to provide. I had a member PM me asking for a QP. We set a tentative appointment, I weighed out a QP on my trusty scale then (as is my practice) threw a bit extra. I was a bit distracted then looked back at the scale showing 118.6g. I tried to put it in a zip lock that should hold that amount easily and I could barely fit the QP in. Puzzled, I tossed an empty bag on the scale and zeroed it. Then threw the bagged QP back on. 118.6g spot on.
Well the gentleman that wanted it went silent on me. A few hours later I had another contact asking for a QP. No problem, I have one ready to roll. Set the meet up. No show... Damn! The next morning another request for a QP and another no show. This is getting frusrtating....
I then got a call from a local patient that needed 5oz. I dumped the QP on the scale. 118.6g. I started adding more and the scale didn't budge. I tried setting a can of beer on the scale - 118.6g??????
I tried another scale and the original "QP" turned out to be 159g. Now I know why it was so tough to get in the bag... I tinkered with the old scale and found that it measured fine up to 118.6g and would stop there regardless of how much weight I added.
I tried three times to give away a free ounce and failed three times :)

My vendor has recommended a Permobil F3 power wheelchair for me. The Permobil warranty is 1 year, requires you to ship it at your cost and you pay for labor. It directs you to your vendor if you need service. Vendor says it will come to you but you pay for the visit.

Replacement for Savage Industries Surgilube
I found out when ordering caths and surgilube that Savage Industries Surgilube in the foil packs has been discontinued. They sent something called Dyna Lube. It's about the worst stuff I have ever used. The packets are not separated so when torn or cut apart, one of them opens up from a tear in the side rendering it useless. When opening up to use, many have thickened to the point where they slide of the catheter they're so thick. Ridiculous.
Any suggestions for a lube in packets that is NOT made in China? Any idea when/if the Savage Industries SL in packets will be available again?

I found the way to get rid of the static from my power chair. It is a chrome beaded chain with connector. You can cut it to adjust diferent sizes. It must be touching the chair frame and the ground. I got it from home depot.

I have seen from the community care forums that this is a valuable source of information that could help me design the best product with your expertise I might be able to develop a product that is actually useful for wheelchair users that is well informed.
I am looking at the broad spectrum right now during my research, and was wondering if i could pick your brains in relation to problem areas, such as unanswered/ unmet needs for wheel chair users.
The current areas I am looking in would be:
Hobbies
Personal hygiene
Posture
Health
Technology
Rehabilitation
Sports
Outdoor activities
Travel
Everyday tasks
In a sense a good way to think about what I'm asking is what pisses you off about being in a wheelchair, the day to day things the big, small problems you face every day.
It's important for me to understand the users needs when creating new concepts.

I've read a number of good testimonials about Peristeen, here and on other forums. But few doctors seem to prescribe it (in the U.S.).
Is there some problem with this? Does it not work for SCI so well? It seems odd to me that it's been approved by the FDA but it's so hard to find a place that prescribes it, and there is not much mention of it here either.

Inquiry on pain relieve options for My Dad
Hi Dr. Wise Young,
my Dad has a tumor removed from his spinal cord in 2009. It is a benign tumor but due to the removal it causes damaged to his spinal cord system and he is experiencing pain especially at his lower part of the body. Around 3 years ago he had an ANS St. Jude neuro-stimulator implanted, but now according to him, it is not working properly to reduce his pain. Currently he is taking lyrica every 3 hours to ease his pain.
My question is that what direction of treatment should we be looking at as I notice there are several options such as:
1/ May be the ANS neurostimulator not working/configured properly, so reprogram/reposition the device could reduce the pain problem he is experiencing
2/ or may be we should look at the alternative approach such as the stem cell treatment in China. and if so what is the best one? I notice there the one using Schwann cell (KunMing hospital), umblical cord (Guang Zhow hospital), and fetal stem cell (Wu Medical center).
Your opinion on this is highly appreciated Sir. Thanks Dr. Wise.

This is the first journal I've posted in 2 plus years. So my room is 18x11x9 with 8 1000w de hps, a 42,000 btu mini split, co2 tank with fuzzy logic controls. This is day 4 of flower and they are already flowering. I now grow in 17"x72" geopot grow beds. In each bed are 6 plants. Currently in flower are 2 beds. One is blueberry haze, and the other is my killer black widow. I'm almost fully automated. All I do is plug in the pump and open valves to beds to feed. Beds are on 2x8 sheets of osb with 3 18" harbor freight furniture Dolly's underneath. The trays are 2x8. The scrogs are 3x8 and the gap in between the first to second is 18". temp with lights on will be between 80-85 and 78 with lights off. RH will be between 60-70%. I water the beds everyday, they take about 20 gallons each. I feed 3ml of floranova 1.5lm of floralicous plus, 3ml calmag, 1 ml rapid start, 3ml of koolbloom. Using nutrifield coco. Each bed is 75 gallons. Feed at 6.2 ph. I feed twice then only water and calmag. I do that until last 2 weeks then it's only water. In veg I used 2 rocket plasmas under each bed and I can fit 2 beds in my veg room 4 in my flower room. Every 6 weeks new beds go into flower. In veg I use flower nutes also. Veg nutes are bullshit. Only diff in veg is 2ml rapid start and no koolbloom.

Can SCI be a Bone Marrow Donor?
Just wondering if a quad can serve as bone marrow donors? My brother was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia two weeks ago and Im supposed to be contacted this week about being a donor. Is there anything I should know beforehand?

Elevating Feet due to Swelling
I've been wearing knee-high support stockings (small 15 mm Hg) for 30 years. My feet swell during the day, and will still be swollen in the morning if I sleep with the stockings on (I did this for 25 years, having no help to remove the stockings at night). Sleeping without stockings allows the feet to drain completely by morning, so I started getting help at night to remove them. But the next day, they quickly swell up again, even with the stockings on. The right foot swells much more than the left, and it recently got a pressure sore on the heel. After four weeks of wearing a boot, the sore has healed. But going back to wearing the shoe causes me to sweat (due to pain, I assume), so I am continuing to wear the boot. Should I buy larger shoes?
I am up in the wheelchair 17 hours per day. I could tilt all the way back during the day, but the stockings seem to keep the fluid from draining out of my feet (due to elastic in calves, I think).
I wanted to get tighter stockings, but my doc (not sci expert) said to just eat less salt. That worked for a while, but not anymore. Some nurses say my stockings are already too tight.
Will the swelling (poor circulation) keep getting worse as I get older? I am 52 now.

Today is the 25th year of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). I feel I had a tiny part leading up to it's passage in 1990 by participating in the group, Disabled in Action, in New York City in 1972-73. One memorable event was our group stopping commuter traffic on Madison Avenue to demonstrate against Nixon's failure to push for the regulations of the Rehabilitation Act.
Sitting in my wheelchair with the bumper of a bus just a foot away from my handrim was scary to say the least. Nixon's re-election campaign headquarters was near our corner and after a while the police hustled us out of the road and we went to the campaign office. The many wheelchairs blocked access in and out of the office and we managed to stay a couple of hours until a representative in Washington, DC agreed to discuss our issues with our group's leader (a quad who is now a high level disability rights administrator).
It was empowering for me to recognize the need to speak out about disability issues, not just in the streets but in my daily life and community. In spite of ADA it's still necessary to do so.

Is their any other good seat bases besides the B&D L51? I like what it can do but hate the way it looks. The bare frame under one's feet looks like a trap for debris etc. Guess I would like it more if it had some type of cover.

Problem with VMI van
Hi,
I'm hoping that someone can help me. I have a 2008 VMI Honda without Suredeploy. There is something wrong with the van. The ramp and the passenger sliding door doesn't work anymore. Nothing happens when you try to open the door and the ramp from the dash. Sometimes the key fob opens the ramp side, but the ramp doesn't comes out, or goes back in. You have to manually operate the ramp each time with the hand crank.
The driver's passenger sliding door and the lift gate door works, but not the passenger side and the ramp. Other than that, the van drives fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

Any advice (or links to past threads) about my bladder aug. and mitrofanoff surgery or the bowel prep for it? I will be admitted Mon July 27. Hello everyone! I have a friend who is a quadriplegic, I think C6, C7!!! He can shrug his shoulders picking up his hands a bit, although no finger dexterity whatsoever!!! Is there any technolgy available for him to control a computer! He has Windows Xp & could be possible to upgrade if need be.
Do you know of any particular brands of technology, type of all in one,USB equipment such as a joystick for navigation with some huge buttons to click enter and other auxiliary functions, perhaps software included. Money is a problem so any high end very expensive technology may be dilemma/problematic, but please educate me anyway!!! Please include websites addresses or other thread on this Forum please if you have any ideas. By the way I am a paraplegic and trying to help this young man to gain access to a computer! He has no one to rely on at this time.

met a chap yesterday that put a wondergel cushion on his bar stool before sitting, of course I had to ask him about it and he was pleased to open the cover and show me the wondergel cushion. I sit on a supracor some of the time and always have a supracor strip on my car seat. This wondergel looks like supracor on steroids. I am constantly looking for great pressure relief, heat relief and cushioning I can use for applications such as my motorcycle seat and buggy seat and most importantly my wheelchair seat!
Does anyone have any input good or bad on this product?

I have a friend with cerebral palsy who uses a keyboard for his computer that has a raised shield on it with cut outs over the keys that help prevent contact with more than one key when he types. The keyboard is malfunctioning and we can't find one that his old shield will fit and we cant find any new shields like that. He is fairly spastic and types one letter at a time.

I have had a SPC for over 10 year. 6 months ago, for the first time ever, I got a green discharge from SPC. A swab and culture confirmed it's Pseudomonas.
Because of recurrent UTIs I've taken strong antibiotics, including IV antibiotics, and while the discharge goes away temporarily it always comes back in a week or 2.
I am keeping it at bay with a heavy betadine routine, but I'd like to kill whatever bug I have for good!
Any ideas? Ideally, I don't want to have to remove the SPC, let the site heal, and then put in a new one.

Can't pass catheter into bladder
I typically straight cath twice a day, occasionally more. I use a 16 inch FR 14 catheter. It's made of a firmer clear plastic as opposed to rubber because my hand dexterity sucks.
Over the past couple of years, I would occasionally have a situation where I would slide the catheter in and feel it get up to my bladder neck, but it would not go in. If I turned my body slightly on my side and pulled one of my knees toward my chest, I could get it to pass through. Basically body shifting and applying pressure to my perineum would typically help.
I remember when it first started happening, I mentioned it to my urologist while he was doing a urodynamics, but he saw nothing wrong with my urethra while he was looking through the scope on the way into the bladder.
The past two days I have not been able to get it in whatsoever. I'm so fucking fed up dealing with constant bullshit that has to do with his disability. But, who isn't? It's as if the catheter is sliding in, but as it curves up with the urethra it gets hung up against the rim of the sphincter as opposed to going through the opening. That's my basic visualization, whether it's correct or not who the fuck knows.
So far I'm reflex voiding, but there is a half bladder of residual. When I am able to catheterize, it's nice to have an empty feeling bladder for the next 4 or 5 hours before the voiding kicks in. So far I am still reflex avoiding, but there is still residual. This leaves A constant full feeling, along with clamminess and sweats. Every five minutes I void about 20 to 50 cc, along with the fun spasms that go along with it.
Anyway, does anyone have any experience with this issue, and what helps?

I just read this article on edible marijuana for pets and was surprised about how positive the affects seem. I'm all for treating the source of the problem in anxiety but I'd be open to using this as treatment for physical problems like arthritis. Still kind of hitting up forums searching for negatives. (b) If the renovation of an existing facility requires a permit or if the estimated cost of the renovation is ten thousand dollars ($10,000) or more, the facility must comply with this section by January 1, 2025.
(c) A facility shall ensure that the entrance to each adult changing station has conspicuous signage indicating the location of the station, and, if the facility has a central directory, shall ensure that the central directory indicates the location of the adult changing station.
(d) For purposes of this section, all of the following definitions shall apply:
(1) ?Commercial place of public amusement? means an auditorium, convention center, cultural complex, exhibition hall, permanent amusement park structure, sports arena, or theater or movie house for which the maximum occupancy is determined to be 1,000 or more people. ?Commercial place of public amusement? does not include any public higher education facility.
(2) ?Adult changing station? means an adult changing table placed within an enclosed restroom facility that is for use by persons with physical disabilities who need help with diapering.
(3) ?Physical disability? means a mental or physical disability, as described in Section 12926 of the Government Code.

Advice for SP Catheter clogging from mucus rather than sediment?
I?ve got a tremendous amount of mucus. When it clogged my catheter,that?s how it came out when spasm pushed it out through my urethra. That was somethingnew and neither terribly pleasant nor reassuring.Is simply the result of an infection or something else? Is there any way to getrid of it other than treating an infection?
I feel fine other than the catheterand just did antibiotics because I had some sentiment causing infection. Itmight?ve been called proteus, although I?m not sure. Is That somethingterrible, worse than normal colonization?

I've got a manual chair with a regular type of sling back it's a TiLite brand on a ZRA. Basically its a nylon shell with some kind of foam on the inside.
When I sit in the chair for a reasonable amount of time, like two to three hours my lower back starts to sweat, enough that it pretty well saturates the shirt I'm wearing and makes the back a little wet to the touch as well (and somewhat smelly after a while).
I'm not sure why this is happening. I didn't have this problem with my first chair. As far as i am aware the TiLite back isn't waterproof and should be at least somewhat breathable.
I don't think it's an SCI thing, though the back covers the transition area between where I have sensation and where I have none (T8ish, never had any issues with AD or inappropriate sweating in any other situation). Nothing like this happens when I lie on my back in bed or sit on the couch, etc. For a while I was even applying deodorant to my back to cut down on the perspiration, but this didn't work terribly well.
So I'm assuming the sling back just doesn't breathe properly.
Has this happened to any of you?
I'm getting a chair evaluation next month and need to go in with exactly what I want in a chair back. I don't really like solid backs because I tend to slouch way back in my chair sometimes and haven't found one that doesn't cut into my back when I do this. As I've mentioned in one of my previous posts, weather is way too hot lately. My feet got swollen. Unfortunately I was wearing crocs without socks. Before going I've noticed some sort of transparent excrescence :( In the morning my feet were fine (not swollen) , but unfortunately the excrescence transformed into sores.
In attach are some pictures of how my feet sores look like. Can you give me an advice about how to heal them?
Now I'm reading the previous pressure sore related posts from CC, and I found that I have to keep the zone clean, moist and to avoid pressure. Does it apply in my case too?

Lotion for new skin
I've got my sore down to barely anything but a lot of new skin. Is there a good lotion to put on it to keep it from breaking down again? The sore was right on the stitch line from a previous surgery.

It began just prior to my loop colostomy and urostomy op. at first i put it down to hemorrhoids and 12 years of digital stim 3-5 times a week during my bowel prog. reason for the colostomy was gastroparesis...urostomy due to years of back to back to back utis. after the surgery the burn kept getting worse and worse with fewer and fewer 'good' days. at present i get 1-2 days a week where the pain is about a 3...all other times its a 6-9 range. doc says i have just a couple of stage 3 internal hemorrhoids that should only cause pain when exposed and my lidocaine 5% - hydrocortizone 2.5% should easily relieve the pain for hours at a time...but it just barley takees the edge off for ~1 hour tops. for thesse reasons he doesn't think hemis are the culprit. i've also been bed bound the last 9 month of an 18 month battle with a pressure wound on my butt. almost fully healed now after getting a muscle flap. i've been cleared to get back in my chair for two months now but after 15 mins the pain gets soo bad it kicks off my dysreflexia....bp spikes, sweats, and headache...textbook ADs. had a spinal nerve block at s4...did no good at all...currenly i'm on 70mg a day oxycodone which also just takes the edge off which means this may be nerve pain. seen a colorectal surgeon...after examining said it appeared as though my sphincter muscle wasn't quite closing all the way and could be the cause. once my wound is healed hes gonna get rid of the hemis and scope mev and go from there. needless to say after an 18 month battle with this wound AND a near constant severe burning butthole, my quality of life is utter shit. if not for my wife i don't think i'd make it.
If anyone has dealt with anything similar, i could sure use some insight. if the cause isn't found soon i am going to literally lose my shit...i just can't endure being totally bed bound and in constant never ending pain much longer. i'm to the point of just telling the to remove my plumbing totally as my disused bladder it starting to cause problems as well but thats another post in itself. tia for any guidance or advice. peace...

Liquid Bandage
Can you use liquid bandage on very small nicks and cuts on your backside? It is right behind my butt hole and can't put tegaderm on it and keep it in place.

Forearm crutch recommendations?
Would anyone have advice on some good forearm crutches? I only need them for going to the movies. Over the years I have been leaving my chair and using a crutch and the railing to go up to better seating. I kept saying each time that it was the last time because it was too hard. My sweetie wants to see some movies and though she never complains about anything I don't want us sitting in the wheelchair seating - the view is pretty bad. So I've been thinking that if I used forearms crutches I could make the trip easier. Maybe it isn't a solution but I won't know without trying. What I'm thinking is to leave my chair and use the crutches then figure some way to stow them at our seats. I don't know how small you can collapse them or if this idea has merit but it's my last idea for making the movie theater work.
She's been happy to get movies on Blu-Ray and watch them at home but if there is a way I can go with her to the theater I would like to do it. Any suggestions?

IC leaking
Hi all,
Recently I was looking to do a mitrofanoff procedure, in hopes that I would be able to cath myself being a C5. My urologist wanted me to take the foley cath out for a week and try IC first to make sure I wasn't leaking, saying that I would be leaking with a mitro if I was leaking on IC. Well, today we took out the foley and I haven't made it 45 minutes before I start leaking. I think this is because my bladder has shrunk so much from being on the foley, but I'm not sure. What can I do to keep my bladder from leaking? I started oxybutynin but it doesn't seem to help. My mom is helping with ICs but this is killing us.

After calling BCBS to know my coverage for wheelchairs and being on the phone for AN HOUR they said that I have to pay the first $3000, even after I told them that it was a medical need and the wheelchair was needed for indoor to be able to perform my daily basis. Unbelievable! I pay each month to my health insurance to get this in return. This is the system that we have to fight against. Criminals with ties. Sorry, I had to vent.

How Much Protein Needed Daily for Optimal Wound Healing?
I've been told that my albumin levels are too low to heal my pressure sore. I had no idea. No one has told me how much protein I need to be taking in each day. I have been supplementing with ProSource Plus 2 x's per day, Boost high protein drinks and eating eggs, Greek yogurt and anything else I like that is high in protein (snacks and such). Of course, I've been laying in bed for weeks now, so my appetite is not very good. It is hard to eat a meal when you are laying on your stomach all the time, but I try, to the point of feeling naucious.
Anyway, I found a web site that said for wound healing .84 grams per pound is what I should be taking, I'm about 174 (yeah, I've gained weight since I am LITERALLY laying around and doing nothing), and that works out to be about 146 grams of protein daily. Is this correct? The doc got on my case about this, and I thought I was doing fine all along. I'm really disappointed and want to get on the correct track.

Get a kitten. Jack is now almost a year old and has had his first experience today with a lizard (maybe a salamander but who cares). We have these black and blue lizards that like to hang out on the south side of my brick house. Sometimes, they like to come into the house. This one found its way into the ancient light fixture in my living room. It is one of the 1970's deals. No recessed lights here as my aircraft electrician husband is afraid of trying to install them.
Any ways, I have no idea now lizzie got there but Jack likes to lay on the tray table of the standing frame (whether Ry is in it or not). The standing frame is in the living room beside the cat condo and almost under the light. Jack has gone nuts trying to brace himself on the ceiling beams and thinking about launching to the light fixture. I turned off the light to relax the lizard. When Tom got home, he used a latge clear plastic bag to cover the fixture (he is tall and using a step stool was able to reach it and remove the fixture without hurting the lizard and take it back outside.
I explained to Jack the cat that he had his chance as the lizard had to come up the steps, cross the floor, climb the wall and cross the ceiling to get to the fixture. I also told the cat the lizards are like toads in that they eat bugs and we like them.
The cat knows his function is exterminator. He eliminated the mice in my house in less than three days when I got him in December (after having to put Spot down due to illness). He kills flies and beetles that find their way in but is so funny to watch.
Right now, he is in the back of the shower supervising Ry's shower. I guess he believes that the water is attaching Ryan but that is where he stays while Ry showers. He comes out wet, Ry is clean and Jack believes his job is successfully done. Hi guys and gals... I'm having to move after 10 years and we've decided to go from a house to a luxury condo that only runs about 70-80 bucks more a month which is still well over two grand... anyway. My problem is with the parking... they charge an extra $125 monthly for unassigned parking in their garage, but with little to no street parking how does this work with my placard? There's a guest lot with accessible parking too, but you have to move your car every 4 hours....? One of my aides has ms and has a placard, does she really have to move handicap spaces every 4 hours? I've been googling ada California stuff to no avail....

Redness and skin splitting of inner thigh
Hello everyone, hoping I can get some advice on a problem I'm having. Lately that crease in my groin area of inner thigh has been red and the skin has split open. This has happened a couple times in the past month or two. I'm guessing the area is getting damp from the warm weather and because I'm always sitting the area isn't getting much air. I have been using a wound spray I have to heal the area which has worked well in the past. But does anyone else have this problem? And what can I do to prevent it from happening again?

After much searching we finally came across a re-manufacturer of Clinitrons that was able to provide a bed through Medicare. They could have also done the dolphin mattress which was our second choice. The company is Star Medical equipment out of Pennsylvania and we were just within their service area and thought this information would be relevant to anyone dealing with serious skin breakdown.

I'm a new para to the forum and I'd like to hear all your thoughts about carbon fiber chairs. I'm currently using a TiLite ZR series 2 manual chair but am looking to upgrade sometime soon but not sure if I should stay with titanium or make a move to magnesium or carbon? I'm looking for the lighest, functional day chair that doesn't look too shabby.
My main concern with carbon are horror stories I've heard about cracking/exploding frames when dropping from steps or gutters. Does anyone use carbon or know of their durability?

SCAM ALERT Green Goblet Festival in Olympia
via Facebook... This guy held a fictitious event and stole from the Medical Marijuana Community. Let's show this guy around and make sure he does not screw anyone else over.

My buddy was given passes to this event by this guy. Luckily he didn't give him any money. We went all the way down there and saw about 5 guys sitting under a tent, one guy was in a wheelchair (poor guy). I asked where everybody was and this guy sitting there said he paid $100 dollars to the man in the picture here (His name is Cameron Ceja on Facebook) for a "judge's pass". The sketchy catering chick said the "host and hostess" never showed up all day. That was at 5:30p for an event that was scheduled until 8:30p. It was pretty sad.

2 Shops Killing it in Olympia!
To any growers in Olympia, if you didn't already know, there are some great grow shops here in town.
The first that was recommended to me by a senior grower in the area is Hefty Harvest. It is a garden and hydroponic supply store with a huge selection, great service, and good products with people who can really help you. If you scroll down on their website you can see they have 2 other locations outside Oly as well. Honestly, I haven't been there too many times, so I can't say for absolute sure how great they are, but every single experience I've had there has been delightful. They even hooked it up with a trial bottle of some nutes the first time I walked in!
The second location is not as cannabis-specific. Right of off 4th, is Eastside Urban Farm & Garden. It is a really nice and quiet farm store that is more than happy to help you with your microgrowery. They sell awesome organic nutrient lines, worm teas, cloning supplies, and a few really intriguing products. On top of everything they sell ready to go, my favorite part about this store is that they sell soil amendments by the scoop. I've walked in there, spent $5 or less, and walked out with a wealth of great nutes for my girls. They sell everything from alfalfa meal, feather meal, blood and bone meal, all the way to some obscure limes and rock dusts that all have their purpose and benefits. There are some amendments I still need to research because I don't even have a clue about what they're for. A good amount of their stuff is already organic also. They also basically have an in house soil scientist. There is a guy, I think named Tristan, who has taken college classes on soil and knows an incredible wealth of information on soil, microbes, nutes, roots, and plants in general. He also used to cultivate his own cannabis in the area so he knows at what angle to come from.
While on the topic and hopefully while you're still reading this, I would like to take just a moment to plug my new line of nutrients! GR0WL0's NATURAL NUTES 4U!!! Alright, jokes aside I would really like to mention something I have noticed. I am by no means a senior or even a very experienced grower, but in the time I've been growing, something really incredible has come to my attention. Before I grew my first plant, I thought I would need to purchase a fancy line of nutrients from a famous brand. When I got really into my first grow, I realized that I couldn't get farther from the truth. I realized that everything anybody needs to support a cannabis plant, or any plant for that matter, can be found in other plants or natural sources. There is absolutely no need to purchase a line of nutrients when you can brew your own teas and mixes for you plants. Now, don't misunderstand me, nute lines have their place in the business. They make it simple for anyone to grow, and can help produce some mighty flowers. All I am saying is that there is a VERY easy, cheap, fun, and extremely beneficial alternative to them. Along with the awesome organic power of the teas, mixing your own allows you to control what you're feeding to your plants 100%. Got some Cin X outdoors right now and they are eating all the teas right up!
If you have a hard time believing in the power of other plants to grow your plant for you, know this: my first grow--which was done with ~6 CFLs, mystery bagseed, and a bunch of minor mistakes--was considered mo' danker than the buds my friends and I were seeing from the local dispensaries. This organic tea tactic works, and if you use it in junction with some mycorrhizal fungi additive the babies are boomin. I use a bacillus and trichoderma additive called Soil Blast by Supreme Growers. There are most definitely cheaper alternatives out there, probably even better, just google it. Anyways, I hope I have inspired at least one soul to try their hand at some organic nute teas, and maybe you'll even stop by Eastside Farm Supply for some amendments! Sorry for the off topic rant...I just don't see any reason why we shouldn't share things to help each other out, and I felt like I was tapping into a goldmine while my buddies were stuck, restricted to feeding their plants only what came in a bottle.

Bowel Impaction?
I need advice,
I do my bowel program 3x a week, at night, using senna 10 hours before, and a magic bullet.
For the past 2 weeks, right after my bowel program, I get bloated in the stomach/intestinal area. Plus the next day my stomach hurts if I eat or drink anything. But the next day after that, I feel fine.
Last night after my bowel program, I got extremely bloated! Within a matter of 2 minutes I went from a fat stomach to looking pregnant. I felt like I was going to burst. But I went to bed. By the morning the bloating had mostly subsided, but still a little bloated. My bowel program results have been on lighter side some nights and average on others.
The bloating has been right after bowel program (minutes later) for last 2 weeks. Last night was much worse bloating. Can this be a sign that I have bowel impaction? Something else?

Last night after my bowel program, I got extremely bloated! Within a matter of 2 minutes I went from a fat stomach to looking pregnant. I felt like I was going to burst. But I went to bed. By the morning the bloating had mostly subsided, but still a little bloated. My bowel program results have been on lighter side some nights and average on others.
The bloating has been right after bowel program (minutes later) for last 2 weeks. Last night was much worse bloating. Can this be a sign that I have bowel impaction? Something else?

Hope it is alright to post classifieds here. A friend suggested I post it here. Have lurked on the forums for years, but never posted.
Freedom Ryder CB-1 lean to steer handcycle. This handcycle is about 10 years old but has been well taken care of. Has Phil Wood hubs, Velocity Aerohead rims, nice deep V cranks for great power, Shimano XTR front hub, Shimano Ultegra shifters set up for rapid shift while pedaling with XT derailer. Also has a nice Wheel Aggressive bag behind the seat for tools and possibly a small hydration pack. Tires do air up and should have some good life left in them, but it has been unused for a couple years now. Everything works great and this handcycle is ready to ride. Also has extra straps on footrest to keep legs from falling out on bumps which is ideal for paralyzed riders. This bike would be great for paralyzed individuals or able bodied who are looking for a great, fun upper body workout!
There is part of a cycling computer on the bike, but do not have the actual computer, so bike is sold without odometer/computer.
Also have some extra parts shown in last picture. Mostly consist of the old style L-shaped cranks which has Shimano XT components.

Monday pu mail on way to house throw clothes in dryer help transfer me to standing frame start vacuuming house< she usually gets done 1 br 10x12 with furnure in it hall way 3'x 5 office 10x12
pour me a glass of milk take out a bucket of dish water for garden put in container takes about 30 minuts then 30 minutes to help undress bathe get dressed leave
tues pu mail vacuum front room 16x 26 maybe get bedroom started 30 minutes then bathe
wed mail finish vacuum bedroom bathe room take diahwater out to garden if anthing ready cut bring in house < I have 10 pepper plant 4 tomotes>
thurs l mail ask her to look around see something please do
same Friday
off sat sunday every 2 weeks I strip bed she makes it as I am standing on sun change cover on cushion I have to tell her wah it down with vinegar water
I have her mop house 2 times a month vacuum 2 times I would really like it every week but that aint happening
she told me Monday she was being over worked underpaid and hatedte garden not doing it any more seriously she just takes the water out and cuts the veggies off 23 times aweek 10 minutes tops
hate to mops floors
so thoughts yes she is dependable and trust worthy this was out of the blue

Who here uses a RTI FES bike and do you like it and have had good luck with it?
I was just wondering what the consensus of the reliability and ease of use and exercise of the RTI is? I use a Electrologic Galaxy and no issues at all, never any problems and easy to use and hassle free, no data connection or anything. Been using for 15 years now and amazes me how trouble free it's been. Can those with the RTI units say the same? I think the oldest RTI's would be around ten years now.

Just some things about me, I am a T7 for 1997 motocross accident (17 years old at the time). I am currently a Porsche, Audi, VW sales person outside of Philadelphia. Very active in my community and as active as I can be in adaptive sports. With my experience and background I assist local families (or not local) in assessing home needs, or driving mobility equipment, mentor new SCI patients, and try and get younger patents into adaptive sports.
