shops closing, need new meds in Tacoma area

A lot of the shops in my area are supposed to be closing down soon and too be honest mine has been mediocre from the start, but i settled out of convenience(two blocks away). Most dispensaries seem to be peddling some good quality stuff sometimes but more often than not its so dry it crumbles instantly. I'm in dire need of a new supplier and I don't trust any of these hoodlums on the street and the whole middleman thing has been done way too many times.... Tacoma/Lakewood area. All help is appreciated...

What is the ABLE Act?

Hey guys! We wanted to share this little blurb of info we collected on the ABLE act. For some of you, you may be trying to figure out insurance and benefits. This may help:

When something catastrophic happens to you or a loved one, it can be easy to forget the other crucial aspects of your life. We?re so busy figuring out how to adjust and continue our lives with the injury that we often don?t think about how it will affect other areas. Unfortunately, health insurance coverage is one of the most important aspects one must figure out ? which is where the ABLE Act comes in to play. In an effort to not bore you with legal lingo, I?ll be brief in why the ABLE Act and current legislation impacts your life.So you have all these living expense, medical bills, and caregiver invoices ? what do you do? With the expectation for care to continue you have to start saving. But until recently ? having a substantial amount of assets in your bank account left you absent of government assistance. Until the ABLE ACT: Achieving Better Life Experience. This new disability-friendly legislation allows families to live a more fulfilled and established lifestyle by opening a tax-deductible savings account. There are millions of individuals that depend on a wide variety of government programs for assistance. But eligibility for most of these programs limits savings to only being $2000 before you get cut off. The ABLE Act allows for persons with disabilities to establish separate accounts where they can store money for general life expenses such as medical, dental, education, special training, assistive technology, housing, transport, and much more. It operates much like a flexible savings account that most households have for college tuition or retirement. The new act was signed by both the House of Representatives and President Obama late this past December and applications will begin in the later part of 2015. In order to prove eligibility, you must project costs/needs and savings goals. Now that the act has passed, the department of Treasury will begin to develop regulations that will guide states into regulating their own ABLE program. If you?re interested in finding out more, click here.

Proctitis?

Last week I was experiencing some extreme pain where the targeted area being affected was my lower left abdomen. I didn't want to take any chances so I went and got it checked out. I was diagnosed with proctitis.

I believe this is a result from getting assistance with my digital bowel program. Is anyone else familiar with this condition?

Does anyone have any advice or tips concerning such?

Is there a hospital that specializes in teaching self bowel care to quadriplegics?

Thank you, all input is greatly appreciated.

Swimwear Preferences Survey

Hi this is for all the women out there! Please take 5 minutes to give your opinion about swimsuit preferences. Your opinions are absolutely confidential and very much appreciated. By compiling your thoughts a more accessible swim line will be created. I myself suffer from Multiple Sclerosis and realize that the swim wear available now isn't created with wheelchair users in mind. My thought would be to create a line that can be used by all women with various abilities.

tilite and froglegs anodizing- do they match?

What a silly first post I know....But hello all! I was wondering if one could reasonably expect (or if anyone has specific experience with) anodized parts from tilite and from froglegs matching in tone (for example 'purple' and 'ultraviolet'). Perhaps as expected, customer service on both ends was less than helpful...

Thanks!

"All Terrain" wheelchair suggestions and experiences

Hi All-

I was wondering if any of you have experience with off road wheelchairs. I have been able to get most places with help when I go fishing or hunting. It apparent that having chair more suited to outdoors would make things easier for everyone. I wanted see what others use and your experiences good or bad with certain chairs. A quick search found Renegade, Invacare Crossfire, and Lasher Sport ATB. So that is what I am looking at right now. Thanks for your help-Rob

TR3 COG with curved lower frame

I am aware that if you order a TR3 with a COG of 3.5" or less then they give you the squared off lower frame rails. However, does that mean the COG for the curved lower frame starts at 3.5" regardless of rear STF height? So that if I have my COG set at 4.5" on the order form, I will still be able to slide it back to 3.5" if I ever needed to? I certainly won't need to go any further than that, I just didn't want to have it set at 4.5" and only be able to slide it back to 4" due to where the frame starts to curve.

power meters for handcycles

Hi all I am a researcher and hand cyclist looking to configure a hand cycle or two with power measurement systems for both training and research purposes. I know cost has prevented their widespread adoption amongst hand cyclists but wanted to hear any opinions if they are out there(the good bad, and ugly , etc). Thoughts on SRM vs Power tap vs others ? Has anyone seen them implemented with electronic shifting yet on a hand cycle ? Thanks so much,

Congratulations, Massachusetts Walks Again

Gathering in the Massachusetts State House to celebrate Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day was a powerful collaboration of legislators, rehabilitation facilities, consumer organizations, scientists, researchers, and advocates. This year the program "Tell Your Story" featured ways to stress the need for increased research funding in personal and compelling terms.

The Massachusetts SCI Trust Fund, established in 2004, has received more than $750,000 in state support for spinal cord injury research in Massachusetts. If you are interested in learning more about this initiative, please contact Dr. Eric Ruby whose dogged persistence created this fund and continues focusing on the purpose through initiatives such as the Annual Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day. Oxalic acid

Just doing a lot of reading on nutrition. Just wondering because of SCI and The associating bladder problems that can often lead to other problems kidney stones, bladder stones, infection etc are we more susceptible to Oxalic acid, from food. Biggest one is spinach. Because it can potentially influence stone formation, and affect the absorption of calcium?

OTC Magnesium 400 mg

I had kidney stone surgery on Tuesday and my abdominal spasms are ridiculously severe and frequent. I called the doctor today, and they suggested trying to take Magnesium 400 mg with the spasm relief medication they ordered me (dissolves under the tongue and starts with a L). I was reading about the Magnesium online, and it mentioned that it could be used for constipation. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with taking this. I would like to know how much people take for constipation, because I really don't need that side effect at this time. I appreciate anyone's feedback.

Ti Lite Camber Plug Question

Ti Lite Users:
Has anyone had their camber plug pop out of their camber clamp on a Ti Lite TX? This caught me completely by surprise because the whole plug popped out. Not to mention the fact that I was in the pool shower room. I went spilling sideways across the shower floor. After recovering what dignity I had left and crawling to a nearby shower bench I found that the plug had just come free of the clamp. The tire axle was still in the plug! I limped home to fix it and reset the plug in the clamp. I was surprised that the screw was still tight. I reefed as tightly as I could on the Allen screw when I was done resetting but now I am a bit suspicious it might happen again.

Has anyone fabricated any sort of bracket for their power chair to push a reel mower? $900 shipped Nice power-assist w/Quickie 2 chair

Hello-
I came across these while searching for M15 batteries... They're e-motion m12 wheels (that look new and were used only 10 time) that are super clean on a quickie 2 foldable with as little use. Everything works great! the batteries were fully charged, removed from the wheels, and stored in a climate controlled home.
They're fantastic, but I have my M15s and will never use them.

Military Mom2Mom provides a peer-support lifeline to New Jersey military families

http://ift.tt/1Gc4PsU

Military families face unique challenges ? frequent moves, long separations and parents returning from active duty injured or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. It can be an anxiety-filled lifestyle for both the deployed parent and the one who remains to manage the household alone ? and even more difficult if the family includes children with special needs.

To help ease the mental health burden of New Jersey families affected by military service, the National Call Center at Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC) has launched Military Mom2Mom (844-645-6261), a 24/7 confidential peer support helpline staffed by military parents and behavioral specialists. It joins three similar helplines operated by the call center: New Jersey Vet2Vet and Vets4Warriors, which serve veterans and active duty, National Guard and Reserve military personnel, and Mom2Mom, which provides support for caregivers of children with special needs.

UBHC recognized a need for Military Mom2Mom to offer support for the families as they navigate many challenges, to suggest professional counseling if the indicators present themselves, and offer guidance on resources available. The helpline is sponsored by a grant from the Health Care Foundation of New Jersey, which launched its Veterans Mental Health Initiative last spring after almost a year of networking with providers within the VA system and the healthcare community. ?We discovered that unattended mental health needs rose to the top of identified gaps in service due to the scarcity of appropriate services available, the wait list for services that do exist and the stigma that often prevents veterans from seeking the help they need,? says Marsha Atkind, CEO of the foundation.

Although the number of military families with special needs children is not quantified, more than 15 percent of children in the United States have disabilities. ?We were seeing a lot of military families calling the Mom2Mom line, and callers on the military lines requesting resources for their special needs children,? says Dawn Dreyer Valovcin, a supervising mental health specialist at the UBHC National Call Center. ?There was a demand to have a dedicated helpline to address these families? unique issues.?

Military Mom2Mom peer support counselor Melissa Tippett, an Army combat veteran who also answers calls to Vets4Warriors, understands the importance of speaking to someone who has been there. When Tippett was medically discharged in 2006, she faced more than recuperation from an injury that caused permanent nerve damage in her right arm: She had to learn how to reconnect with her two young special needs sons after deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq.

?Mothers are the traditional primary caregivers, and it was challenging to reintroduce myself to these small children who didn?t know me,? says the Dunellen mother. ?There are no words I can use to describe how tough that time was.?

Peer support counselor Melissa Tippett, an Army combat veteran, keeps this photo of herself during her time in service on the wall at the call center. ?There are no words I can use to describe how tough that time was," she says about being separated from her children.
Her son, Nasir, 11, suffered from meconium aspiration syndrome, a condition that places him at risk for serious breathing problems. Rahim, 9, is on the autism spectrum. ?It?s complicated when you?re in the military and have a child with health issues,? she says. ?I had to take extra leave when Nasir went into cardiac arrest and had to have a blood transfusion. I thought we would lose him.?

Although Tippett had supportive family and friends, they couldn?t relate to her situation ? none had ever been deployed parents or injured in service. She recalls the support she received from a Vietnam veteran who befriended her while she was undergoing treatment at a VA hospital. ?I was as miserable as I could be, and he helped me so much just by listening,? she says. ?We had an instant bond; I didn?t need to explain anything since he had walked in my boots.?

Tippett says callers to the helpline receive the same support. ?They don?t have to explain to me what it?s like to move four times in three years or how you deal with your child when you are in the field for two weeks,? she says. ?I get it.?

Military Mom2Mom answers calls from anyone ? parents, spouses, children ? who is affected by military service. The callers range from parents concerned about their children in the service and military families grappling with reuniting with a parent, to spouses seeking resources for special needs children or helping a loved one who is struggling with a service-related disability.

Peer counselors provide ongoing, personalized support, resource referrals and call families back to check their progress. ?We stay in contact with them until their issue is resolved,? Tippett says. ?We want them to know that they are not alone.?

Testosterone benefits decreasing over time

Have any of you guys had this experience? I started getting biweekly testosterone shots in late June on the advice of my rehab doctor to cope with my fatigue issue. I felt fantastic through July and into mid August, now I'm back to feeling tired and no energy. The thing is this is the second time around I've had this happen. Did the shots a few years ago, felt great for a few months and then the positive effect stopped so my family Dr. decided to discontinue them because family history of both prostate cancer & heart disease.

Sorry I don't know my dosage info at the moment and I also don't know what the level of free testosterone was when I got tested before starting in June. I'm T11/12 incomplete with Spina Bifida, 46 years old. I've had fatigue issues for the last 10 years and the testosterone is the only thing that seems to help but then it stops working. I've been tested for all the usual stuff that can cause fatigue like iron & thyroid issues and tests showed every as being normal. Was diagnosed with complex sleep apnea and treated with c-pap and oxygen at night, didn't make one bit of difference as far as improving my energy or fatigue.

Should my Dr. be ordering another free testosterone test to check levels? Should something else be tested that she might have missed? The only change that has happened med wise is a increase from 20mg a day to 30mg a day of Prozac. Would a uti or another infection negate the positive effects of testosterone over a longer period. I remember having a few uti's the last time but we kept going with the testosterone for a good couple of months after that & things didn't improve. This time around I had a infected foot which was treated by antibiotics. Have had two shots since the last infection cleared up but no improvement at all, back to feeling tired and lacking energy.

nontoxic mega colon

Internist told me I have the symptoms of non toxic mega colon including recent impaction, infrequent but large bowel movements, and distention of the colon. Post SCI 30 years I have been dealing with severe bowel problems for last 5 to 7 years and I thought it was just a poor diet so took silver bullets, senna, lactosome and water pills daily. Had surgery in July including a colonostomy. Now my bowel movements are becoming less violent but I still would rather just avoid other people and public places at this point. If I was writing a book on freaky things that happen to people in chairs with an appliance in public I would be on chapter 13 by now. I am eating lettuce and other sources of fiber but the waste at my stoma is mostly water with some chunks just big enough to clog the collection bag. The diagnosis of mega colon in SCI is still fairly new but are there other ways to get over it or is having a mega colon like luggage going to follow me around forever?

What kind of tubes for 26" tires

I'm sure this question has been addressed, but the clunky search function wasn't any help in getting me to the multiple threads which I'm sure exist, so I apologize in advance.

So I've been lazy ever since switching over to Schwalbe marathons and let the bike shop put new tires and tubes on when they need it... those tires are just so damn tight and I hate being in the situation I find myself in tonight where I have no choice but to roll around on my flat left tire after pinching all four of the spare tubes I had lying around the house.

The bike shop changed my tires today with some new marathons and the tubes they used were 26x1-1.25 ISO 26/32 559/571. My wheels are 26" 590s.

I'm fairly sure the tubes they used were appropriate, but once I got home and aired them up I had a detonation of my left wheel about ten minutes after inflating it to 140psi. The tubes I had lying around the house (and seemed to fit rather well) were 650x 18c - 25c (26x1). But they were just some cheap super light weight tubes that I picked up from a bike shop years and years ago.

So what brand/size of tubes should I be using. I don't care a bit about rolling resistance, I just want the tube that is the best combination of durable, able to withstand high pressures (I run 140psi all the time) and easy to install (though I'm sure that's practically impossible with these goddamn tight, tiny marathon tires... I love them, but only when I'm not struggling to put them on).

Anyway I'm stuck without a working tube until midday tomorrow, so I was hoping you guys would have some suggestion as to what tube I should be using so I can tell the bike shop when I show up tomorow?

Also should I be worried about ruining my tires in the mean time. I am going to be rolling around on a flat just around the house, but I'll be going out to the car several times because I have to pack it up tonight for a trip out of town tomorrow. It'll probably get a half mile or so of rolling on it before I have a chance to change it.

New medication Horazint

I saw a new neurologist earlier this week (Dr. Becker from Hopkins.) He looked at my MRIs, concurred with the other doctors that there were a couple of little cysts among the scar tissue between C-4 and C-6, and that the area was stable over the years. I told him about my extreme pain issues, and that I tried everything known to medical science to try and get some relief with no success. He said there's a new medication available. It's a variation of gabapentin (Neurontin) that's better absorbed by the body so, I'm trying it in addition to my Lyrica. If this helps, I'll let you guys know.

There is a new "We the People" petition to Stop Medicare from Making Inappropriate Cuts to Complex Wheelchair Accessories that is scheduled to take effect in January 2016. You only need to enter your name/e-mail/zip code.

Quote:

Despite past legislation & recent congressional action, Medicare is diminishing reimbursement rates for complex rehab wheelchair accessories & seating systems in January 2016. This will have a devastating impact on severely disabled people across the U.S.

People with significant disabilities such as ALS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy & spinal cord injuries rely on these items to meet their medical & independence needs.

No clinical or medical evidence has been provided as to why these changes are necessary. If this policy is not rescinded, major decreases in availability (or outright elimination) of individually configured complex rehab wheelchair systems will occur.

To protect access for people with severe disabilities, this policy must be rescinded.

Petition to preserve complex rehab technology in USA

http://wh.gov/iQ51K

Petitions may not have a large effect but they are a way of educating people. Preserving funding for complex rehab technology is truly a critical issue now in the USA, scary in multiple ways. If this change passes, not only will the government not fund this equipment, but insurers will not be far behind. What makes it even worse is that this will discourage companies from investing in new products for us, because Medicare and other insurers will not reimburse. We are returning to the olden days when SCIs had to buy all equipment out of pocket. I encourage everyone, whether directly impacted or not, to please sign because this will only continue to impact other reimbursement areas if we don't speak up. They say we are 20% of the population, so this is the time to show our real clout.

Unfortunately, this move was kind of foreseeable. Medicare would lose billions of dollars over the next decade due to the ACA, that was brought to light before it was enacted. Also, providers are pricing their products at ridiculous markup costs. When a high end wheelchair costs more than a fully electric car, to me, it's understandable that insurers won't continue paying for equipment. Insurance has created noncompetitive inflation.

Many newly injured may not have the opportunity to live a full life if this change is enacted. And we will live with "unsupported" equipment that will eventually wear out, and our lives will be drastically worse.

Medicare and push handles?

Has anyone heard of medicare refusing to pay for push handles on a wheelchair?

I've been helping an online friend get her first wheelchair. An Icon. She received it today, but there are a LOT of problems. One of them is it showed up with no push handles. She was told 2 separate excuses, one of them was that the dealer didn't think she really needed them and removed them from the order. She was also told that since medicare only cares about wheelchair use in the house, they won't pay for them. They're around $235 I believe on the Icon order form.

She's really lucky she HAS an Icon considering the mistakes the dealer has made. She is SWIMMING in the chair, and she complained repeatedly when they delivered the chair and yet they kept telling her she was fine and only adjusted the wheel spacing, would not adjust the chair width. I think part of the reason may have been a combination of laziness and the fact they'd brought a size 16 cushion for her to demo, so maybe they had no other cushion options right now. Speaking with her she said she's swimming in the chair and expressed that she cannot propel it at ALL right now, and feels as if her shoulders are going to dislocate when she tries. The current seat pan on the chair is the narrowest at 14, but she's a size 0 and it sounds as if she may need narrower! She's now thinking she remembers the OT to have measured her around 12 wide. It shouldn't be an issue to swap out the seat pan with Icon, but of course if she needs such a drastic change the backrest will have to be swapped as well. She currently has a comfort company Acta back.

Any suggestions? She's going to email the OT about the problems and changes the dealer made from what was agreed upon. The chair was also supposed to come with a headrest and didn't. She's going to take photos so I can get a better idea of what parts are currently on the chair. And I told her she should contact insurance and tell them to not pay until this has been resolved, that the chair she has received is NOT the chair that was ordered.

Reoccurring UTIs

I have always drank a liter of water everyday including my coffee in the morning and a glass of water with my pills in the evening. I did this for a year and a half without getting a UTI which is the longest I've ever gone without having one. Now it seems I'm just getting one after the next and sometimes when I am on an antibiotic. My urologist nurse told me that I should be drinking a gallon of water a day. I have tried to step up my drinking by adding 1 extra glass of water in the evening and one extra glass of water in the morning. Now I have started another antibiotic after having my urine cultured and I believe I just got another UTI right before I started this antibiotic or right after. Sometimes when I drink a lot of fluids it comes out throughout the day but sometimes my leg bag won't fill up for hours and then it'll all come out at night. There are days like that when I noticed a start of chills and headaches which is my tell tale signs for a UTI. They have not dissipated since starting this antibiotic. Should I continue on with this antibiotic or should I get it cultured just to make sure I don't have another bug that needs to be treated with a different antibiotic? Also, what should I be drinking every hour of everyday to ensure continuous flow of fluids?

New Creaking Topolino Wheels

For anyone that has bought Topolino wheels, did they ever creak? If so, did it go away after time?

Background:

I bought a Tilite ZRA s2 a few weeks ago. I opted for the 25" Topolino wheels. From the get go they creaked horribly. It's like I'm pushing a poorly maintained old beater chair.

Issues: Some of the spokes were loose. I tightened them a quarter turn, but that is as far as I was willing to go in tweaking these very expensive wheels that I don't want to damage. Furthermore, the chair handled poorly, so I checked the alignment of the rear wheels and they were toe'ed out 7/8" :eek1: (the minimum allowed is 1/8"). To me that speaks volumes about Tilite's lack of quality control. Anyway, I aligned the chair properly. While the chair now handles great with substantially less creaking of the spokes, some creaking still remains.

As my chair vendor is two hours away, I asked them to let a local bike shop professionally adjust my Topolinos at their expense. (I did after all just buy a new $4730 CAD wheelchair from them and naively thought they would want to keep me as a happy returning customer.) I was wrong! The long and the short of it is they refused--stating that their Tilite rep. is telling them that noise is "normal" for the Topolino wheels. "The spokes just need a while to be broken in", they're saying. Sounds like bullsh!t to me, but what do I know. I've been running quiet, trouble-free Spinergy Spox wheels for the last 12 years. Hence, my leading questions...

Please let me know your thoughts.

Invacare Libra cushion cover

I just got a new chair and the cushion that came with it is called the Invacare Libra. I have been unable to find any sites that carry the cover for the seat. Just wanted to ask if anyone had any ideas where to look. I checked with invacare and Sportaid they were no help. I need the 15x16 cover. Any help would be appreciated.

For the first time, a paraplegic has walked without a robotic suit

A paraplegic has walked without robotics using his own brain waves, thanks to research done at Southern California's UC Irvine. Scientists used a computer to "link" 28-year-old Adam Fritz's brain to his legs over a Bluetooth connection, bypassing the severed region of his spinal cord. An EEG then picked up signals from his brain, which were relayed by a "brain-control interface" (BCI) computer to electrodes on his knee, triggering walking movements. Though Fritz was supported and only walked haltingly for 12 feet, the research is being heralded as a milestone -- so far, paralyzed patients have only be able to walk using suits like that from Ekso Bionics.

Icon wing foam

From my research I am guessing it is some kind of smooth handlebar foam. The wing tubing has an OD of about 1 (25mm) inch. The only foam I am finding is 20mm ID. I don't know if that will stretch and fit without tearing. Does anyone know if this difference in inside and outside diameter is what is meant to fit?

Tire is swollen in one spot?

I have been bed bound to heal a stage IV pressure wound. I got in my chair yesterday for the first time in over a month to go to a Dr. appt and noticed that one of my tires has a swollen spot about 6 inches long. What is this from? I'm pretty sure that the tires and/or inner tubes need to be replaced. Both are "puncture resistant", none the less, is it age that has caused this (the tires/tubes are about 2 years old) or something else like environment or lack of use of my chair? The last time I used my chair before yesterday was back in August when I had another doctor appointment, and I had to put air in them. I inflated the tires to the specified PSI indicated on the tires, which is what I've always done, and is pre-set on my air compressor, which automatically shuts off when it reaches that point.

I've ordered new tires and tubes, but in the meantime am wondering what happened, as this is the first time I've seen this in 15 years of using a wheelchair.

where to buy longer axle?

I will be using 25" spinergy LX wheels on a TR3 (1" rear wheel spacing). But i'll need to swap on a set of 24" LX wheels with knobbies and therefore need longer axles with spacers. I want to space those wheels out about 1/2" on each side. So where can I buy axles that are 1/2" longer than the ones used for Spinergy's 1.87" hubs on the LX? I've seen on Sportaid that there is an option for axles that fit Spinergy wide hubs (2.3"). Would that work? Any other suggestions?

I can't seem to find this info, or pics. I'm trying to figure out how D's locks mount to the camber tube of a TR3 with LX wheels. Can you get it integrated into the Ti-lite clamp that's already there, or does it have to be a separate piece? Any pics would be great. Thanks

LiteSpeed Billet Aluminum Soft Rolls - A bit... sticky/trippy?

Hey all! After four years, I FINALLY got my ZRA! Been using it for a few days, and while some of the qualms I have may just be me needing time to adjust (the chair is several inches higher than my old one, so I feel a little unstable in it), I have been noticing something a little unusual with the soft rolls I got: they seem to, well, get stuck on things rather often, leading to near falls more often than I'd like. Sometimes they're large uneven cracks perpendicular to my path of travel (those aren't surprisingly), but sometimes, they get stuck on small cracks or dips, or they get stuck in innocuous/invisible gutters that drastically change my direction of travel.

My previous chair didn't feel nearly this unstable, so I'm trying to figure out how much of this is due to these particular casters, and how much of it is due to my chair being taller, less wide, and shorter (which, all combined, do probably lead to a bit less vertical stability than my old chair).

The question for y'all then is: have any of you experienced this with the LiteSpeeds? I remember folks saying they preferred the Frog Legs soft rolls instead, but I don't recall why.

Thanks!

best ways to use a walker safely?

http://ift.tt/1Lxzln8 I use a up n free gait trainer I guess it is, it has a bicycle seat and strap for support and the seat has a piston that supports some of my weight. It has been great for unassisted gait training, but have been thinking that more weight on my legs would be best if I hope for my legs to get stronger. Trying to find the most inexpensive yet safe way to practice while being fully on my feet yet still being secure if I stumble. Appreciate all feedback. Thank you, Ian

Problems with generic drugs

I'm having some issues with my pharmacy. I take baclofen, klonopin and ditropan. The pharmacy keeps switching generic manufacturers and it's causing me some problems. In the last 9 months I've been on 4 different manufacturers of baclofen, 2 different klonopin, and 2 different ditropan. I know generics are technically the same, but they just aren't. The newest baclofen in particular is bothering me... seems to make my body temperature drop more than it usually does and causes some odd sensation issues. The klonopin did the same only worse.
I talked with them about this and got them to order klonopin from a specific generic manufacturer, but now they say they can no longer get that... so it's on to the klonopin that bothered me.

If I request non-generic only, the price will soar, so I need generics. I'm afraid if I change pharmacies, the same thing will just happen. Or they'll stock the generic baclofen that bothers me. Do I literally need to call pharmacies and ask who manufactures their drugs etc.?
Thanks

Solid, white tissue appearing on former pressure sore

Hello! I developed a pressure sore in my tailbone my first year of SCI (10 years ago). It took something like a year or two to finally close and it remained that way for the past years.

Over the last few months I've seen a white, solid tissue (I'm saying tissue because I don't know what it is) that's forming right where the sore was. It's not bigger than 3/8 of an inch. It's bothering me while I'm seated; I don't feel the skin, but I get goosebumps.

The funny thing is that I use a Jay J2 gel cushion. I think the gel patch was not set up correctly because I re set it and now It's not bothering me while seated yet the white stuff is still there and it still bothers me when I'm seated outside the cushion.

My doctor saw it and told me to remove it. He told be it could be something like a benign tumor.

Has anyone had this? Any ideas?

SP stoma is still leaking...

Since last December, my bladder has been leaking around my stoma. I have changed medications from Ditropan 5-10-15mgs to Myrbetriq 50mg and now to Vesicare. When I changed to Myrbetriq, I went about 2 months without leaking, but started leaking leaking again it hasn't stopped since. I'm currently taking Vesicare 10 mg twice a day. I was taking it once a day but it didn't help, so my urologist bumped it up to twice a day... and its still leaking. Bladder infections have been ruled out as the cause and two cystoscopies revealed nothing out of the ordinary. I asked my doctor about botox but he said he didn't think it would help in my case, but has offered no other ideas on fixing the problem. I asked about bladder enlargement and he said it was an option but apparently I'd have to travel elsewhere to have it done.
Are there any other options and if not, how well does bladder enlargement work, and are there many problems with this procedure? I've been doing bed-rest for about 19 months due to pressure sores, but they are healed now and the bladder problem is what I need to get solved before getting back in the chair again.
My catheter drains well but I'm still leaking like a sieve. I need help...

25 years old just diagnosed with ddd

I recently went to the doctor having just got insurance since moving to Arkansas from Louisiana. I tried going to the doctor for my back pain while in Louisiana but none of the doctors would listen or believe that what I was saying about my pain was true. Anyways, I went the 15th of September to my first Pcp doctors appointment and told them what had been going on with me. I have had lower back pain for several years but for whatever reason I wasn't believed and was basically dismissed. My back pain is right where the indentation area in everyone's back is. Within the last year it has been getting progressively worse so much so that on my first visit I told my doctor. She sat down and listened to me asked a few questions about how long it's been going on and if I have family members who have the same problem. I know of three generations in my family who have ddd and bulging disc and problems of the sort. She ran her hand down my spine and when she got to the area it hurts I jumped because well it hurt a and I told her so. She also noticed I have a small bruise in that same area that has been there permanently since the pain started getting worse. She immediately ordered an x-Ray and gave me some medicine to help with inflammation and pain. I came back the next day and did the x-Ray. I got the results of the x-Ray on Monday. They said that I definitely have ddd and that I need to get an mri done which I will be doing tomorrow. I just wanted to know what you might think could happen knowing what I know now. I have two children 6 and 1 and there dad is a truck driver so he's not home but maybe once a month so whateverhappens I need to be able to take care of them. What is the best course of action doctors could take at this point? Info please?

Freedom Ryder Twist Shift For Sale

Hey everyone! I've had this Twist Shift lying around in storage for some 15 years or so, and figured I should finally put it up for sale. Was only ever used two or three times, with less than 10 miles on it. Took a pretty nasty fall during that last ride, so there's a bit of damage to the handles, but everything else appears to be in good condition still. Gear shift is on the column that leads up to the hand pedals, rather than on the tilt bars as pictured on the Freedom Ryder site.

I'd much prefer to have someone come do a local pickup here in San Francisco to avoid the hassle of shipping this, but that is also an option. Prices for these seem to be all over the place, but let's say $800 or best offer.

Photos here. Thanks!

Super roots Air pots

Lactulose, one time

I've been feeling incompletely emptied in the stomach region after bowel program for six months. It's been getting worse with a bloating feeling.

A n.p. prescribed 60 mg lactulose once an hour until it works. I am trying to get "cleaned out". I take miralax twice a day and magic bullet each day and a half. But the person who prescribed it was not an SCI specialist and seemed unsure.

What seems good just to get cleaned out or emptied as a one time thing? Just until I can make appointment with specialist, which takes a while.

Need advice regarding friendships

I am looking for some advice. First a little background.
I am a 63yo female with a C5-7 incomplete sci. That makes me incomplete quadriplegic since 2003.
Here's the question. I have some very good friends and we've traveled together every year for the past twenty years. Obviously we've all aged to the point where were 63, 66 and 67. My girlfriends are in great shape, healthy and fit. I've noticed over the last year though that it getting a little more challenging to travel. I'm a lot of work. I walk short distances using a walker, but I'm not able to take care of luggage lifting my wheelchair, etc, so that falls to my friends. I also think that I hinder their activities like hiking, kayaking and more.

Anyway. I know when I talk to them about not going on our next outing to the Keys they will be sad and maybe try to change my mind. Am I being too sensitive? Please help my figure out how to tell them that I am not going on vacation with them this time.

I look f/w to hearing from you.

Thanks, Chris

Wake UP, Shakig, Freezing Hot?

I?ve been having issues at night and it?s getting worse. It?s every night, and I don?t get much sleep because of it.

I wake up every hour or two, just shaking, muscles clinched, feeling like I?m freezing cold, but I know I?m not. I feel so cold, I would swear I?m freezing. But if I sit up a little and uncover my arms, it starts to go away. It?s like I?m overheated. My temp is normal, I can feel the warmth coming from under the blanket. Though it?s not like real warm. I live in Phx and spend hours outside when it?s 100 degrees. When I get to hot, I never feel cold or shake. Just feel hot.

I don?t know what to do. I?ve tried wearing a shirt, just a sheet, more blankets, no blankets. If I use no blanket I wake up shaking cold, freezing, but his time I am cold. The other night my temp was 94.5.

So no matter what I do, I wake up just shaking, feeling like I?m freezing. Maybe 2 nights a month I can sleep all night without waking up ?feeling? like I?m Freezing.

I?ve tried sleeping meds, and meds to try and help with the tingling in my arms, etc. Nothing helped.

I know most quad feel cold and have the tingling like arms are in ice water, but anyone else have this at night, even if too warm?

Thx, Greg

hemorrhoidectomy

I am a T4/5 complete paraplegic woman, 58 years old, 28 years post injury. Among a lot of other problems related to the accelerated aging process I experience the last 2-3 years, i have very frequent episodes of AD every day, specially in the afternoon, 7-9 pm, and so i have to take antihypertensive drugs sublingually (captopril) and then face the hypotension, the sensation of empty or numb head and the tinnitus. I have a third grade hemorrhoidal disease ie mucosal prolapse reducible after manual handling and anal sphincter hypertonia which causes to me difficulties and AD during bowel program. I did not find any other cause for AD, my suprapubic catheter is working, I have done intravescical botulinum injection, plain film (intestine full of gas),cystoscopy, colonscopy, (many polypes) i don?t have any bone fractures, pressure sores, kidneys or gallbladder stones, no syringomyelia and i tend to consider ? maybe i am wrong- the hemorrhoidal disease and the anal sphincter hypertonia as the cause for AD. I feel good only 2-4 hours after the bowel program and if it is a succesfull one, (peristeen) ,the rest of the day, I feel belly discomfort and abdominal pain, non the old pain i am a complete, a new one but is always pain, intestinal spasms with or without AD or with or without sweating which always comes like a rendez vous 7-9 in the afternoons or 11-13 in the morning. The morning all the symptoms are always milder. 2-3 hours after eating i have intestinal spasms and if I do not pass any intestinal gas during the resting postprandial time which is very common for me, I have to suffer the hole afternoon or go back to bed and try to eliminate some gas by pressing my belly. I did a very conservative Lords anal stretch and I drink a medicinal natural herb which helps me to eliminate some gas but not always. After this operation my blood pressure during AD episodes is lower (150/100 instead of 190/110 before operation) but is still present. My surgeon suggested me a Longo stapler hemorrhoidectomy but I am very concern for the operation itself and specially for the postoperative period because of Autonomic Dysreflexia. Does anybody have similar problems or experienced a Longo stapler hemorrhoidectomy? Are there any other alternatives?

A stone about 1/8" long exited the catheter (intermittent). There are no other symptoms, although there were some blood clots during the prior catheterization.

Should l call my urologist? Is this anything to be concerned over?

For anyone that gets pulled over by an unmarked police vehicle....

I think I jinxed myself last week when I posted on someones thread that I hadn't had a single interaction with police for nearly 10 years... :/

I was driving south on I-5 passing through downtown Everett yesterday, and I must have passed an undercover, unmarked Dodge Charger because I was lit up before I knew it. I'm typically very aware of who I'm passing, and I always eliminate each american made car as a police vehicle (or not) before I come up on them, but I was listening to comedy and talking to my son at the same time, so my attention could've been a little more focused. Anyways, he pulled me over (the first time in 9.5 years!) and said he pegged me at 78 mph AND also tacked on a "following too closely" ticket just for fun. Why not, right?
Ever since I've become aware of what my rights are I've not had to use them, luckily, but if I were ever to be pulled over and get a ticket I've secretly hoped it would be by an unmarked, illegal police vehicle.... and this one was! Lucky me. Haha. I say that because I've known for years that the undercover, unmarked police vehicles are illegal. This unmarked charger has no obvious lettering on the sides of the vehicle, no green state agency sticker, and no "exempt or WSP" marked on his license plate. This car didn't even have a single antenna on it. There was no way to distinguish this charger from any other charger on the road, which is a concern for public safety because of police impersonators, which is why there is a law about it in Washington state.

When he came up to the window I was sure to roll it down only about 2 inches- just enough to give him my paperwork. I had my ID and insurance in hand and held it out for him as he walked up. He first asked me if there was any reason I was going 78 and following too closely? ...I was thinking to myself- Is there any reasonable answer to this question that could get me out of a ticket!? Of course not, its a trap for you to admit guilt! So I remained quiet and just stared at him as I continued to hand him my paperwork. He then asked me to roll down my window more because he couldn't hear me (even though I wasn't saying anything). I said, "The window is fine..." He took my info and said he'd be right back.

A few minutes later he came back with my ticket and I asked him, "How close is too close to follow?" He told me he couldn't hear me, over and over again, so I reluctantly rolled down the window for my own sake. He told me I was following at one car length (which I wasn't- although he was before I passed him), and that its generally 1 car length for every 10 miles per hour... so essentially if you're going 60 it should be 6 car lengths. Most every car in traffic was closer than that! I then again asked him what the legal limit was then, and he mumbled and said something to the effect of , "There is no legal limit, its just based on whatever is deemed to be "unsafe". So basically whenever he feels like writing someone up for it he will! Anyways, I then asked him if he was aware that his patrol vehicle was illegal. He denied it and told me to look at the RCW. I told him I am very aware of the RCW and his state issued vehicle is illegal. I asked him if he had a green sticker in the right bottom corner of his rear window or if he had an exempt license plate and he said, "No." He still insisted his car was legal and I insisted that it was not, and that I will 100% see him in court. I then told him I was going to get out, so that I could take a picture of his vehicle without the appropriate markings and he said, "No you're not." I said, "Why not, is that illegal?" His answer was, "Because I will arrest you and put you in handcuffs..." and I said, "For?". His response was, "For trespassing on the highway." At this point we stared each other in the eyes for like 20 seconds... I just know he was thinking... try me dude. Haha. I stayed put cause my son was in the passenger seat, but I really did want to get that picture of the back of his car! After he got back to his vehicle he backed it up about 50 feet, so it was real tough for me to get a good photo of his car. I was however, able to get his admission to not having either form of identification on my voice recorder on my phone, so that is a plus. ;)
The last 3 times I got speeding tickets (10-13 years ago), I contested the tickets, subpoenaed the officers notes and for the offier to show up to court, and all 3 of them were no shows, so the infractions were all dropped on the spot. Pretty fortunate for me those times because if the officer showed up I had no case. But that was my plan for them not to show up and it worked. If I did happen to see the officer sitting in the court room my plan was just to walk out and go pay my ticket at the front desk, so I didn't have to make a fool of myself... The way I see it is if they did show up I would've at least wasted a little bit of his time having to wait around in the courtroom while I had already left the building. With these new infractions though, I have an actual defense if he does show up, which I hope he does, so he can once again answer my questions (on stand) regarding RCW 46.08.065, and how his vehicle is indeed operating illegally. I have a gut feeling however, that he won't show up because I know they handed out a crap ton of tickets that day- they had people pulled over all up and down I-5. If he knows his car is actually illegal I think he will "let this one slide" but I truly believe he thought he was right, and that he is just ignorant about it because his supervisor never made him aware of such a ridiculous thing. The problem is that the people who are breaking the laws are also the ones who are suppose to uphold them, so of course nothing is going to be done about it if they can continue to get away with it and make $$$ for the state. Why would they press charges on themselves!?

If I wasn't 100% sure I was right I would've never argued with him in the first place. If his car was a marked police vehicle I would've not said a single word to him and would've been on my way. But everyone who has been issued tickets from this vehicle have not been legal! Its just disgusting they're getting away with it. My car was clean and I wanted to flex my rights. Someone has to...

I encourage you all to read this court brief which someone spent a lot of time preparing for anyone to use in its complete and unaltered form, as evidence in anyWashington State legal case involving unmarked police vehicles! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for to help me in my court appearance.

Enjoy!

Searching for similar foley in the U.S.

I've been trying to find a solution to a problem I've had with the design of foley catheters. The extended tip on regular foleys cause too much bladder irritation and damage. I started using Poiesis's Duette catheter and they work well but the length still causes slight irritation. I found a catheter that is available in the UK, the tip is open and appears to be shorter than the tips of regular foleys. I may be wrong but it seems to be a better design. I've searched the internet and have not been able to find similar ones sold here. I was curious if any members have found similar ones. This is a link to the UK's design. http://ift.tt/1FoIJsb

Wheelchair Axle Diameter

I have my original ZRa with stock wheels. I also have a set of Sun Fusion wheels I bought a few years ago. I don't recall being asked about my preferred axle diameter, but the new Sun wheels came with compatible 0.5 inch axles. Then just two months ago I bought a Permobil Helium manual standing chair. My expectation was that the wheels on it, Spinergy SPOX, would be interchangeable with the ZRa wheels. Unfortunately, the Spinergy wheels on the Helium chair have 12mm axles. Since the chair was made in France, it is not too surprising, in hindsight, that the axles are a metric size. It did surprise me, though, since I've never been asked about my preferred axle diameter during this or any prior order. So now I might be stuck with wheels that work fine on the chair they're with, but nothing else. The workaround seems to be to replace the Spinergy hubs with a 0.5 inch compatible version and find a machine shop to ream out the camber tube to 0.5 inch, a job complicated by the two degree camber. If I only wanted one-way interchange, I could probably make the 12mm axles fit the 0.5 inch hole in the ZRa camber tube by use of some 0.010 inch shim stock. But I really want them to go both ways.

Any suggestions or how others have dealt with this?

New Aquila Cushion

I saw an ad for a new Aquila seat cushion where the battery is contained within the cushion. In reviewing past posts that mentioned the Aquila cushion, the last post was close to 4 years ago. Just wondering if anyone has this new Aquila cushion and what their thoughts are.

Thanks

Ride Designs cushion on ergo frame??

I wasn't able to find any info on this when searching. I've heard that Ride doesn't recommend this. However, I've had therapists tell me they have seen people make a cut in the bottom of the cushion right where the ergo frame turns up so that the cushion conforms to the angle of the seat pan. Has anyone tried this and/or do you see any reason this wouldn't work. It seems like it would to me.

What to eat or drink to reduce sediment and catheter clogs

30 years post C4-5 injury. Just in the past year started seeing increased sediment in urine bag & experiencing catheter clogs (used to be able to go six months between catheter changes). Diet hasn't changed but losing weight (because avoiding fluoride -- but that's another story ... and I know it sounds crazy, but it works and there's evidence of fluoride reducing thyroid). I've tried drinking cranberry juice & more water but neither are working. I'm also not having UTI symptoms. Is there something I can eat or drink to clear out the gritty, brownish, sand-like deposits collecting in the catheter (or avoid producing them in the first place?

Thanks!

Flu Season 2015-2016

Everyone 6 months and older should get an annual flu vaccine. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop full protection against the flu. Get vaccinated to protect yourself and your loved ones!

Remember that pulmonary infections and respiratory failure remain the #1 cause of death long-term in SCI, and it is very easy for the flu to turn into pneumonia or ARDS for someone with a SCI.
Every year, 40,000 people in the USA die from seasonal flu. While the flu shot is not a 100% guarantee you will not get the flu, if you do, and were immunized, it will be less severe. Shorter days and cooler evenings. It is fall?and often the time that we start seeing people get sick with flu. By getting a flu vaccine for yourself and your entire family every season, you can help prevent flu-related illness, missed school and work and even more serious flu-related illness.
Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory disease that infects the nose, throat, and lungs and can lead to serious complications, hospitalization, or even death. Pneumonia and bronchitis are examples of serious flu-related complications. The flu also can cause certain health conditions, like diabetes, asthma, and heart and lung disease, to become worse. Even healthy people can become sick with the flu and experience serious complications. But even if you are one of the lucky ones who bounces back quickly from a bout with the flu, people around you might not be so lucky. Getting a flu vaccine is the single best way to protect yourself and your family from this serious disease.

Everyone Needs a Flu Vaccine Every Flu Season
Flu viruses are constantly changing, and different flu viruses can circulate and cause illness each season. Flu vaccines are made each year to protect against the flu viruses that research indicates will be most common. Also, immunity from vaccination declines after a year. This is why everyone needs a flu vaccine every season.

While everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine this season with rare exception, it's especially important for some people to get vaccinated.

Most people who get the flu will have mild illness, will not need medical care or antiviral drugs, and will recover in less than two weeks. Some people, however, are more likely to get flu complications that result in being hospitalized and occasionally result in death. Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections and ear infections are examples of flu-related complications. The flu also can make chronic health problems worse.

People who have medical conditions including:

  • Asthma
  • Neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions [including disorders of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve, and muscle such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy (seizure disorders), stroke, intellectual disability (mental retardation), moderate to severe developmental delay, muscular dystrophy, or spinal cord injury].
  • Chronic lung disease (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD] and cystic fibrosis)
  • Heart disease (such as congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease)
  • Blood disorders (such as sickle cell disease)
  • Endocrine disorders (such as diabetes mellitus)
  • Kidney disorders
  • Liver disorders
  • Metabolic disorders (such as inherited metabolic disorders and mitochondrial disorders)
  • Weakened immune system due to disease or medication (such as people with HIV or AIDS or cancer, or those on chronic steroids)
  • People younger than 19 years of age who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy
  • People who are morbidly obese (BMI 40 or greater)

Note
: There is no recommendation for pregnant women or people with pre-existing medical conditions to seek special permission or secure written consent from their doctor for influenza vaccination if they get vaccinated at a worksite clinic, pharmacy or other location outside of their physician's office.

Also, it is generally recommended that people with SCI get the HIGH DOSE version of the flu vaccination which is also recommended for those over the age of 65. Read more here: http://ift.tt/GSSRMp

It is also highly encouraged that your family and caregivers get their flu vaccine as well. Not only will this help protect you from the flu, but it will keep them healthy and able to provide you with the care you need during the coming flu season.

Smoothing out handrims

I developed an annoying burr on one of my handrims (I dropped the wheel onto cement). This is quite painful to wheel with if I do it wrong and don't have my gloves, or if I catch my exposed fingers.

I bought "Wet Or Dry" 600 Ultra Fine grit sandpaper today. I was looking for 000, but the customer who helped me said he did metalwork on vehicles and used that - and the store didn't have 000 as a choice.

Will this work to smooth it down? I believe the handrims are aluminum anodized. The only other thing I have in my toolkit (so far) is a round metal file, but that tends to work *inside* things better than outside them... :lolz:

Thanks for keeping this country girl rollin'!

Edit: Cerebral Palsy with full hand function, poor balance necessitating a chair so I minimize the number of unplanned meetings with the ground.

Tiny Scab on Each Cheek

Well, I have a tiny scab on each butt cheek. I don't know how they got there. I did not scrape my butt on anything. Would pressure alone cause two scabs to develop? I use a Roho high-profile cushion and I relieve pressure hourly. My butt is quite pink when I get into bed at night. I experience no sweating, clamminess, spasticity or anything like that. Thanks.

Wound stopped healing

16 weeks ago I had my bladder removed and gained an urostomy. All went well for a week oR so until staples were removed. Within 24 hours of staples being removed, the pouch leaked and all the steri strips fell off. Resulting in 9"+ of the surgical incision opening up. Was off work 8ish weeks and for a while wound was healing nicely. Did medi-honey first then been using fibricol & alganate ever since.

In past 3 weeks visiting nurse is convinced it's not shrinking anymore. Wound clinic applied silver nitrate this week for 'bubbly skin' and besides hurting the wound got much bigger and deeper. I sent pictures to my surgeon yesterday. She's saying the wound should've been healed by now and I may need a skin graft. I'm already on a high protein diet and have been drinking several boost/ensures a day for even more protein. Any suggestions? Things I should be asking the wound clinic?
