working on a bed vs the floor?

I've known for a long time that if I could get on the floor I could work on a lot, but getting there and back not so easy. Was thinking what if I got one of those exercise mats and put it on my bed to make it a bit more firm and used that for safe things like crunches and non rolling movements that might be unsafe? The floor would be better, but would a mat on the bed be a sufficient alternative?
