When your SP Cath Comes Out - How Long the E.R. Wait?

Hey all,

I guess I should have asked this before tonight. When your SP catheter accidentally comes out and you can't put it back in yourself, how long do you wait in the E.R.? Without going into too many details, I was under the impression that they'd rush. Nope I waited almost 3 hours.

By the time I got to the E.R (which wasn't busy). it had been out 40 mins. Saw the doctor an hour after arriving but they refused to try to put it back in because my chart said my cath changes were ''challenging because the site was really tight and painful''. So they called the on-call uro. I asked them to please try as it's seriously tight under normal circumstances, the earlier the better. Or at least help me while I try again myself. No go. I ended up waiting another hour and a half for the urologist and by the time I left? No one had offered assistance or anything. I got yelled at for taking alcohol wipes because I decided to change it myself and no one would give me any (well iodine or anything would be better than alcohol wipes but I didn't really have a choice here).

Yeah while I waited, I managed to get a 12F just to drain my bladder. Then I had a coude tip and got that in. By that point I was so frustrated I just went home and figured I'd manage to get my regular cath in by myself, probably in a cleaner environment and with pain meds. Stupid? Maybe, I hope I don't get an infection but I'm glad I was able to - I repeatedly asked to be taught how exactly because I feared bring in this situation but they always refused. SO today I had to take the plunge on my own and hope for the best. Essentially, my chart says my cath changes are difficult because the hole is so tight that they just flat out refuse to help and make me wait another hour and then some. By any logic wouldn't waiting so long without even trying make a cath change more difficult if not impossible? Maybe I had ridiculously high hopes in this health care system (not sure why I still do at this point). I don't know, from now on I guess I'll be doing it myself or enlist the help of nurses I know and stocking up on supplies just in case, surely that'll be faster and less frustrating?

Please enlighten me, is this normal or did I have ridiculously high hopes of having some assistance? Sorry for the rant!
